Can a pharmacist renew a prescription in Alberta?
Yes, in many cases. Alberta pharmacists can renew a prescription for an ongoing medication when it's safe to do so, so you have enough until you can see your prescriber. Pharmacists with Additional Prescribing Authorization, like ours, can also adjust a prescription or start a new one when it's within their competence. Our guide to Alberta pharmacist scope explains the details.
What we can usually renew
- Blood pressure and cholesterol medicines
- Diabetes medicines
- Thyroid medicine
- Birth control
- Inhalers for asthma and COPD
- Many other medicines you take every day
What a pharmacist can't renew
Opioids and other narcotics, and other controlled drugs, need your prescriber. The same goes for anything that needs a test result or an exam we can't do at the pharmacy. If that's the case we'll tell you why and help you figure out the quickest way to see a doctor.
How to get a prescription refill without a doctor
- Bring your bottle, or tell us where it was filled. If it's at another pharmacy, we can transfer it for you.
- Have a quick chat with the pharmacist. We ask what it's for, how it's working and whether anything has changed with your health or your other medicines.
- Get your renewal and refill. If it's safe, we renew it and fill it, and with your OK we let your doctor know. Can't pick it up? We deliver free anywhere in Edmonton.
What does it cost?
For Albertans with a valid health number, the pharmacist assessment is usually billed to Alberta Health, so there's no fee for the visit. You pay your normal cost for the medicine itself, and many drug plans cover that.
