Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro in Edmonton, prescribed by your pharmacist.

Weight loss injections in West Edmonton, prescribed by a pharmacist. Our prescribing pharmacist can check whether you are eligible for GLP-1 therapy like Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro and write the prescription on the spot, with the medication ready the same visit. The consultation is covered by Alberta Health Care, and we follow up with you every step of the way.

Can a pharmacist prescribe weight-loss medication in Alberta?

Yes. Alberta pharmacists with additional prescribing authorisation can assess eligibility for medically supervised weight management and prescribe GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy when clinically appropriate. The assessment is conducted in person at the pharmacy and includes ongoing follow-up and monitoring as part of the care plan, with the prescription dispensed on the same visit when eligibility is confirmed.

Four options. One program.

For deeper background on each, see our guide to weight loss peptides covering Saxenda, semaglutide, tirzepatide, and what the trials actually show.

All four are weekly injections. They differ in active ingredient, approved use, maximum dose, and clinical evidence. Our pharmacist helps you choose.

Ozempic®

Ozempic

semaglutide 0.5 to 2 mg, weekly

Health Canada approved for type 2 diabetes, widely prescribed off-label for weight loss. Starts at 0.25 mg, titrates over 4 to 8 months. Average ~15% body weight reduction over 68 weeks (STEP trials).

Best for: type 2 diabetes

Wegovy®

Wegovy

semaglutide 2.4 mg, weekly

Same active ingredient as Ozempic, but Health Canada approved specifically for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight plus a comorbidity. Higher maintenance dose, dedicated obesity indication, often easier insurance coverage.

Best for: chronic weight management

Mounjaro®

Mounjaro

tirzepatide 2.5 to 15 mg, weekly

Dual agonist activating both GLP-1 and GIP receptors. Approved for type 2 diabetes (off-label for weight). ~22% average body weight reduction at highest dose (SURMOUNT trials). Often reported as stronger appetite suppression.

Best for: stronger appetite control

Trulicity®

Trulicity

dulaglutide 0.75 to 4.5 mg, weekly

GLP-1 receptor agonist approved by Health Canada for type 2 diabetes. Auto-injector design, less titration sensitivity than semaglutide. Modest weight loss observed off-label, smaller magnitude than semaglutide or tirzepatide.

Best for: type 2 diabetes with simpler injection schedule

The same steps work for Saxenda and Trulicity.

Ozempic in Edmonton

Ozempic is semaglutide, a once weekly injection approved in Canada for type 2 diabetes. It is also widely prescribed off label for weight loss. Our pharmacist can check whether it suits you, start you on a low dose and adjust it with you over the first few months. Curious how quickly it works? Read how long Ozempic takes to work.

Wegovy in Edmonton

Wegovy has the same active ingredient as Ozempic at a higher maintenance dose, and it is approved in Canada for chronic weight management. That approval often makes private plan coverage simpler. Our guide to Wegovy and semaglutide in Canada covers who qualifies, and our Ozempic and Wegovy cost guide covers pricing and coverage.

Mounjaro in Edmonton

Mounjaro is tirzepatide, a once weekly injection that works on two receptors, GLP-1 and GIP, instead of one. In Canada it is approved for type 2 diabetes, and many patients report stronger appetite control than with semaglutide. Learn more in our Mounjaro in Canada guide.

Saxenda and Trulicity in Edmonton

Saxenda is liraglutide, a daily injection approved in Canada for chronic weight management and the longest established option here. Trulicity is dulaglutide, a once weekly injection approved for type 2 diabetes. Our pharmacist can prescribe either one when it fits, and our weight loss peptides guide compares Saxenda with semaglutide and tirzepatide.

Not sure which one fits you? Our weight loss medication guide puts every option side by side, including Saxenda and the oral choices.

Your first three months

A pharmacist beside you the whole time.

  1. Weeks 1 to 4. Dose initiation.

Starting doses, 0.25 mg semaglutide or 2.5 mg tirzepatide. Expect 1 to 3 kg of weight loss and a tolerability check-in. We focus on settling into the medication before escalating.

  2. Weeks 4 to 12. Dose escalation.

Dose increased every 4 weeks as tolerated. Pharmacist follow-up at week 8. Most patients lose 5 to 8% of body weight by week 12 and report significantly reduced hunger and fewer cravings.

  3. Three-month milestone.

Full review with the pharmacist. We assess response (≥5% weight reduction is the clinical responder threshold), handle drug-plan paperwork, and plan the next phase. Expected: 5 to 10% reduction on semaglutide, up to 13% on tirzepatide.

Check your BMI

See if you may qualify.

GLP-1 therapy is typically prescribed for a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 and above with a weight-related condition. This calculator gives you a starting point.

Eligibility

Who qualifies for GLP-1 prescribing.

We follow Alberta College of Pharmacy and Health Canada criteria. Walk in for a no-cost eligibility check.

Clinical criteria

  • BMI ≥ 30 (obesity)
  • BMI ≥ 27 + weight-related condition
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Hypertension or dyslipidemia
  • Sleep apnea or cardiovascular disease

Exclusions: personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2, active pancreatitis, severe GI conditions, pregnancy or planning pregnancy.

Side effects

Most resolve in 2 to 4 weeks.

First 1 to 4 weeks, many patients experience some nausea, reduced appetite, or mild fatigue as the body adjusts. Manage by eating smaller portions, avoiding high-fat meals, and staying well hydrated. We monitor injection-site reactions, constipation, and adjust as needed.

Cost & coverage

Consultation covered. Drug, often partially covered.

Pharmacist consultation, billed to Alberta Health Care. Drug coverage varies: most private plans (Sun Life, Manulife, Great-West, Canada Life) cover with prior authorization. Provincial plans generally don't cover for obesity without diabetes. Out of pocket: $250 to $400 / month at standard doses. Manufacturer assistance programs available.

Common questions

Frequently asked.

Where can I get Ozempic in Edmonton?

At Acme Drug Mart in Meadowlark, West Edmonton. Walk in or call (780) 443-0202. Our prescribing pharmacist checks whether Ozempic or another GLP-1 medication suits you, and if it does, we can write the prescription, fill it and deliver it free anywhere in Edmonton.

Can a pharmacist actually prescribe Ozempic for weight loss in Alberta?

Yes. Under Alberta's pharmacist prescribing regulations, a pharmacist with additional prescribing authorization (APA) can independently assess eligibility and prescribe GLP-1 medications. We do not need a doctor's referral.

Is Ozempic covered in Alberta for weight loss?

Usually not by the province. Alberta's public drug plans generally don't cover Ozempic or Wegovy for weight loss alone, unless you also have type 2 diabetes. Most private employer plans do cover them with prior authorization. The pharmacist consultation itself is billed to Alberta Health Care.

What's the difference between Ozempic and Wegovy?

Both use semaglutide. Wegovy reaches a higher maintenance dose (2.4 mg vs 2 mg) and carries a dedicated obesity approval, which often simplifies coverage. Ozempic has a longer real-world track record but is technically off-label for weight management.

Can I get Mounjaro in Edmonton without a doctor?

Yes, when it is clinically appropriate. Our pharmacist can assess you and prescribe Mounjaro without a doctor's referral, the same way we prescribe Ozempic and Wegovy. In Canada Mounjaro is approved for type 2 diabetes, so we talk through coverage and whether it is the right fit before you start.

How long until I see results?

Most patients begin noticing reduced appetite within the first 1 to 2 weeks. Meaningful weight loss typically begins within 4 to 8 weeks, with the greatest effects accumulating over 6 to 12 months.
