What can an Alberta pharmacist prescribe without a doctor's referral?
Pharmacists with additional prescribing authorisation in Alberta can assess and treat 30+ minor conditions on the same visit — UTIs, yeast infections, cold sores, allergies, contraception, smoking cessation, and more — and order common lab tests when needed. Alberta Health Care covers the assessment for residents with a valid health number.

Most patients leave with a prescription in 10 to 20 minutes. If your case is outside our scope, we refer you to a doctor and explain why.
Cost
Fully covered by Alberta Health Care.
Pharmacist assessments are fully covered by Alberta Health Care if you have a valid Alberta Health Number. There is no out-of-pocket fee for the visit. If a prescription is dispensed, only standard medication costs apply.
