The assessment is conducted in person at the pharmacy and includes ongoing follow-up and monitoring as part of the care plan, with the prescription dispensed on the same visit when eligibility is confirmed.

semaglutide 0.5 to 2 mg, weekly
Health Canada approved for type 2 diabetes, widely prescribed off-label for weight loss. Starts at 0.25 mg, titrates over 4 to 8 months. Average ~15% body weight reduction over 68 weeks (STEP trials).
Best for: type 2 diabetes
semaglutide 2.4 mg, weekly
Same active ingredient as Ozempic, but Health Canada approved specifically for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight plus a comorbidity. Higher maintenance dose, dedicated obesity indication, often easier insurance coverage.

tirzepatide 2.5 to 15 mg, weekly
Dual agonist activating both GLP-1 and GIP receptors. Approved for type 2 diabetes (off-label for weight). ~22% average body weight reduction at highest dose (SURMOUNT trials). Often reported as stronger appetite suppression.
Best for: stronger appetite control
dulaglutide 0.75 to 4.5 mg, weekly
GLP-1 receptor agonist approved by Health Canada for type 2 diabetes. Auto-injector design, less titration sensitivity than semaglutide. Modest weight loss observed off-label, smaller magnitude than semaglutide or tirzepatide.
Best for: type 2 diabetes with simpler injection schedule
Your first three months
Starting doses, 0.25 mg semaglutide or 2.5 mg tirzepatide. Expect 1 to 3 kg of weight loss and a tolerability check-in. We focus on settling into the medication before escalating.
Dose increased every 4 weeks as tolerated. Pharmacist follow-up at week 8. Most patients lose 5 to 8% of body weight by week 12 and report significantly reduced hunger and fewer cravings.
Full review with the pharmacist. We assess response (≥5% weight reduction is the clinical responder threshold), handle drug-plan paperwork, and plan the next phase. Expected: 5 to 10% reduction on semaglutide, up to 13% on tirzepatide.

Clinical criteria
Exclusions: personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2, active pancreatitis, severe GI conditions, pregnancy or planning pregnancy.
Side effects
First 1 to 4 weeks, many patients experience some nausea, reduced appetite, or mild fatigue as the body adjusts. Manage by eating smaller portions, avoiding high-fat meals, and staying well hydrated. We monitor injection-site reactions, constipation, and adjust as needed.
Cost & coverage
Pharmacist consultation, billed to Alberta Health Care. Drug coverage varies: most private plans (Sun Life, Manulife, Great-West, Canada Life) cover with prior authorization. Provincial plans generally don't cover for obesity without diabetes. Out of pocket: $250 to $400 / month at standard doses. Manufacturer assistance programs available.
Common questions
Yes. Under Alberta's pharmacist prescribing regulations, a pharmacist with additional prescribing authorization (APA) can independently assess eligibility and prescribe GLP-1 medications. We do not need a doctor's referral.
The pharmacist consultation is covered. The medications themselves are generally not covered by provincial drug benefit plans for obesity unless you also have a concurrent type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Most private employer plans do cover them with prior authorization.
Both use semaglutide. Wegovy reaches a higher maintenance dose (2.4 mg vs 2 mg) and carries a dedicated obesity approval, which often simplifies coverage. Ozempic has a longer real-world track record but is technically off-label for weight management.
Most patients begin noticing reduced appetite within the first 1 to 2 weeks. Meaningful weight loss typically begins within 4 to 8 weeks, with the greatest effects accumulating over 6 to 12 months.
